The tradition of the service flag originated in World War I when mothers, sisters and wives hand stitched special flags to hang in their windows as a sign that a loved one was overseas. The simple flag design used traditional colors: a white background, red border and a single blue star. In 1917, Army Captain Robert L. Queissner patented The Blue Star Service Banner as an American symbol of a family member on active duty. He himself had two sons on the front line.

Today, the Blue Star is still used by American families to show their pride in the courageous men and women who serve our country in conflict and in peace. The simplicity of the Blue Stars design and the sincerity of its message identify it as one of the great American symbols of sacrifice, pride and honor.
