State bird of no less than 7 states, the gleeful cardinal travels throughout the Southeast, and even into the mid-western US. The male is notable for its cheerfully red plumage and black surrounding bill, while the female wisely blends with her surroundings. Proudly posed in a sturdy birch tree, this couple seems to be evaluating their resting point with an eye towards the future.
