To do justice to any portrayal of wildlife, I feel it is imperative that I get to know the creature and the landscape in which it lives.
Al Agnew has been sketching and experiencing his natural surroundings for a lifetime. As a boy, he hiked the rivers and hills of his native Ozark Mountains, bringing home birds, snakes and turtles to study and sketch. Now an award-winning, full-time artist, Als dedication to wildlife has taken him throughout North America and Africa, as he fulfills his quest to immerse himself in the habitats of the creatures he portrays.
This harmonious collection of songbirds includes (clockwise from noon): the Chickadee, Goldfinch, Purple Finch, Blue Jay, Tufted Titmouse, Cardinal, and in the center, the delicate little Nuthatch. Portrayed in their winter plumage, these feathered friends are familiar creatures in most of the United States, beautifying the country with their lofty songs and colorful features.
