Marc Chagall was born in 1887 and grew up in a poor Jewish family in Russia. After studying in St. Petersburg, Chagall moved to Paris, France in 1910 where he was befriended and encouraged by the poets Cendrars and Apollinaire. Returning to Russia in 1914, Chagall held various teaching appointments, then worked prolifically as a printmaker, painter, potter and sculptor, as he was attracted to art in all its forms. Subjects ranging from the Bible, the circus, sweethearts and flowers have all figured into Chagall's creations.
