The Iris Lamp was first created in the Tiffany Studios around 1900 as a hanging lamp - one of the first hanging lamps created for aesthetic purposes. The original Iris Lamp is still in the family for which it was commissioned.
As proud as Louis Comfort Tiffany was of his beautiful windows, he was equally delighted with his lamps. This new art form became possible and practical through the invention of the electric light bulb by Thomas Edison. The light bulb was as revolutionary in its time as are television and computers today. No longer did Louis Comfort Tiffany have to rely on sunlight to illuminate his glass.
