Predating Christianity, the oldest examples of the cross were found in a cave in the French Pyrenees and dated to 10,000 BC. The first crosses bore tribute to the sun, the divine center of the universe. An ancient and universal symbol, the cross is also associated with the Tree of Life: the vertical line representing a spiritual path from the earth to the heavens, the horizontal arms, the physical world. In the center, the lines meet, creating a balanced circle where all forces unite.
The design of The Celtic Cross is based on the Great Wheel-Cross of Conbelin at Margam Abbey. Nestled in the peaceful hills of South Wales, Margam Abbey Church was founded in 1147 by the Cistercian monks, and is still used for worship today.
